Cultural Encounters in Southeast Europe
(5-6 March 2020)
“Cultural Encounters in Southeast Europe” aims at attaining a revisited picture of the Balkan lands through a collective analysis of the cultural aspects of the communities forming them. The historiography of the previous century has mainly dwelled upon the ethnic, cultural, and political peculiarities of nations and minorities which in turn helped establish a range of individual political histories with only loose ties with each other. However, the organizers of the conference firmly hold the view that approaching the Balkan lands in its entirety from various aspects is of prime importance to reach a more balanced understanding of the historical experience of the Balkans.
In order to achieve this goal, the organizing committee of the conference seeks to bring together a selected group of academics primarily from Balkan and Central European countries. The conference promotes researchers and scholars from different fields of humanities to contribute with papers on the exchange of artistic notions and styles on a regional level, migration and repopulation in the Balkans, trade routes, commerce and exchange of goods as a form of acculturation between Balkan peoples, everyday practices in transition from an historical perspective (culinary culture, dressing, fashion, music), as well as the collective architectural and musical artifacts. Panels with a distinctive topic to exchange the latest findings of a particular field of study by a limited group of contributors are also encouraged. We are pleased to inform you that the conference, to be held in Istanbul on 5-6 March 2020, will be organized by the Center for the Southeastern European Studies of the Istanbul University in collaboration with the Faculty of Letters. Papers can be submitted in Turkish and English. We kindly ask you to send the title and an abstract of your paper by December 31, 2019 to email@example.com. Please note that the adjustments and/or changes made in the titles of your presentations should follow the general thematic framework of the panels for which you were initially selected. The accepted papers will be announced on 20 January 2020. There is no registration fee.
Further details and information concerning the organizational and logistical aspects will be announced in September. Participants attending the conference from those countries whose citizens require an entry visa for Turkey are kindly asked to send the organizers a copy of their passport/travel documents in case an official invitation for visa applications could be needed.
With kind regards and best wishes,
The Organizing Committee of the Conference
